Errigal College recognised with “Making Our Country More Inclusive” award
The Young Social Innovators “Speak Out” competition is a national competition for secondary schools, which aims to create a fair and equal world.
Having got through to the final stages of this prestigious competition, a group of Transition Year students with their teacher, Leanne Wray and Ms Karen Mc Grath travelled to City West Hotel on 10th May to present their idea. The students were required to “speak out” about their project and answer challenging questions in front of a large audience, including Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.
The goal of Errigal College’s project was to create an awareness of the different nationalities in our school and to build a more welcoming atmosphere for those who don’t have English as their first language. They created a wallet-sized card for teachers to carry which had, ‘Hello, how are you?’ in different languages on it.
This simple idea makes students feel more welcome as they come into the classroom, genius! They also created a placemat containing useful classroom phrases in the six most common languages in use in the school and these are in use in every classroom.
There were over 400 entrants for this award and Errigal College finished cream of the crop in their category, proudly taking the trophy for, ‘Making Our Country More Inclusive’. This is a tremendous achievement and the college is immensely proud of how our students performed on the day.
Errigal College principal, Mr Charlie Cannon spoke of his delight. “We are very proud of our students’ and teacher’s achievement. They have worked extremely hard all year and it is fantastic to see this work recognised. Incredible achievement!”
One Good Idea: Wattzap
It was a busy week for Errigal College as the following day, May 11th, another group of students travelled to Dublin Castle for the ‘One Good Idea’ initiative. Run by Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, this programme sought to inspire people to make small lifestyle changes to use energy more efficiently and tackle climate change. Catriona Hasson and a small group of students, having finished in the top 20 in the country, travelled to Dublin Castle for the final of the competition. The students performed outstandingly well and their idea to use social media to encourage people to save energy was a huge success. Although not taking home the top prize, the group finished in the top 7 in the country which was a superb achievement in itself.
Well done to all our students who represented the school.

On Monday May 23rd, starting from the school using the Park Run route of St. Connells Hospital and the town park.

Errigal College Athletic Success
More success came for Errigal College on May 11th when students went to the USSAA District C Track & Field Championship in Antrim with teacher Mr. Fabisiak. Students brought back a fantastic 7 medals! Shane Irwin performed outstandingly, winning bronze in the 200m and the relay 4x100m. Likewise, Brendan Finney got bronze for 400m and was also part of the relay team. Keelan Shiels won bronze for his high jump with Eoghan Rafferty and Kyle Sylvia wining bronze as part of the relay team also. The above students are all through to the All Ulster Finals. Well done to all!
