TEMPERATURES have hit a scorching 26C this afternoon as forecasters warned thunder storms could affect parts of the North West later this evening.

Met Eireann has issued an Orange Status weather warning for Co Donegal until after midnight tonight.

The forecaster says heavy rain has already hit Wicklow and Wexford and parts of Kildare.

There are severe lightning strikes from north Kildare through Westmeath and into West Cavan.

It is also affecting parts of east Tyrone.
