Sinn Féin Councillor Liam Doherty has welcomed confirmation from Donegal County Council that the Finn Valley is to receive a further €70,000 in funding to carry out repair works to local roads.

The funding, which will come from the second Tranche of monies from the Local Authority’s ‘Severe Weather Allocation’, will be used to provide advanced drainage and resurfacing works to a section of damaged roadway at Meengorry, between Raphoe and Letterkenny.

Cllr Doherty said “I very much welcome this commitment from Donegal County Council that a further €70,000 is to be allocated to carry out necessary drainage and road resurfacing works at Meengorry, near Raphoe.

“This funding is being made available through the Severe Weather Allocation Fund, which is money which has been devolved to local authorities to assist with repairs to roads which have been damaged following recent storms and flooding.

“The fund may be used for drainage, resurfacing and preventative works, and this will be the case for this section of roadway following the allocation of additional monies here in the Stranorlar Municipal District.

“I am also happy to have it confirmed today that Donegal County Council has employed additional outdoor seasonal staff to advance these works, meaning that there are now double the normal workforce levels here in the Finn Valley.

“The contractor which is in place to carry out both the drainage and preparatory works expects to have this work completed within the next two weeks at the latest.

“This is great news for local residents, and all those who regularly use the road between Raphoe and Letterkenny, and I think it’s also important that appreciation be shown to the local authority for its efforts to resolve this problem and have these works completed.”
