Deputy Pearse Doherty and Senator Pádraig MacLochlainn have urged people from across Donegal to have their voices heard over spiralling motor insurance costs by attending a Public Meeting on the issue this Monday 11th July at 7.30pm in Letterkenny’s Station House Hotel.

The meeting, which will be chaired by Senator MacLochlainn and will feature an address by Deputy Doherty, has been organised to allow members of the public to share their own views and experiences relating to the soaring costs of car insurance premiums.

Speaking ahead of next week’s meeting, Deputy Doherty said: “Sinn Féin has organised this special public meeting next week to give ordinary people from throughout Donegal the opportunity to voice their concerns and growing frustration over the spiralling costs of motor insurance.

“I am calling for as many people as possible to attend Monday evening’s meeting in Letterkenny where everyone will be asked for their views on excessive motor insurance costs, and to share their own experiences on what has become a huge issue across our island for motorists.

“It is time for drivers who have had enough to show the insurers and this government that they are fed up with the rip off. Only last month, I discovered that the government’s so-called taskforce to examine this issue hasn’t even begun discussing the causes behind the increases after months in operation.

“This government’s complete failure to properly tackle and address this issue is simply not good enough and thousands of motorists are paying dearly for their inaction.

“I have constantly raised the issue of the unsustainable business model of the insurance industry and the lax regulatory environment which has allowed insurers to conduct their business in such an imprudent manner.

“It is now time for real action if we are to properly tackle the rising cost of motor insurance and to create an environment of greater transparency within the industry so that drivers are no longer ripped off.

“Sinn Féin has been to the fore in demanding that changes be made to the insurance industry and to how it is regulated, and we will continue with our campaign to ensure that every possible effort is made to resolve this problem which countless motorists now face when seeking insurance cover.

“Again, I want to reiterate my call for people from across Donegal to mobilise in large numbers for Mondayevening’s meeting, and I very much look forward to hearing from constituents and working with them to solve this issue.”

Senator MacLochlainn added: “Monday evening’s meeting has been organised so that we may gather together and listen to the people of Donegal and hear first-hand their stories of the growing scandal concerning excessive insurance costs.

“Pearse and I are very much looking forward to hearing the views and opinions of people from across this countyon Monday evening, and I would encourage everyone to come along and have their say.”
