What do you do with a cowlick?

Very very few gentlemen pass through the doors of Mavericks Traditional Barbershop who are not sporting some form of a cowlick! They think that they are in the minority and there is nothing you can do with it!

A cowlick is a tuft of hair that shoots up or grows in a different direction than the rest of the hair. Cowlicks are visible and common among men since men usually have short hair, so any stray or errant lock is easily visible. Cowlicks are normally located around the fringe or crown of the head, but can appear anywhere really.

Most guys have to deal with a cowlick that just will not stay down. Fortunately, there are various ways to keep a cowlick down. The first step is knowing where the cowlick is.

Identify your cowlick

Sounds easy, but still has to be done. You can easily identify a cowlick since it is characterized by a swirl of hair going in the opposite direction to the rest of the hair. In a lot of cases, a cowlick appears right on the front of the head, over the forehead.

What to do with it

Some guys just accept it and don’t do anything with it. Usually because they are told for so long that there is nothing you can do with it. Well if you have the right barber and happy to work with him(her) you can disguise the cowlick or even use it to your advantage in a number of ways.

There are various hairstyles suitable for men with cowlicks. The simple option is to shave it down into a tight hair cut, so that it is no longer visible. A great option that suits most guys is a messy look on top tapered to whatever you like on the sides.

While you can also have the side parting that curves over the front to cut it out which is a very popular and slick looking option, or a favourite of mine is the Jamie Vardy where the fringe is tapered in tight and continues out to a spiked style on top.

Products to use.

Products can make various hairstyles possible. Hair pomade is good for keeping spiky styles in place. There is nothing better on the market for this than Layrite pomade. It’s the Rolls Royce of hair products for men.

For more advice on cowlicks or any hairstyle call into us on lower Main Street Letterkenny, we guarantee great haircuts in a classic barbershop environment. Also follow us on Facebook
