The decision of the UK to leave the European Union raised many serious issues surrounding the future relationship between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

This situation required particular attention by Irish politicians at both national and EU levels to ensure that ‘PEACE’ funding, at least, would continue to be available from the EU.

Speaking following her vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg in support of continuation of ‘PEACE’ funding, Independent MEP Marian Harkin said that it had been hugely beneficial in fostering cross community relations while also supporting many community projects in the Republic’s border counties.

The Independent MEP was voting in the context of the Parliament’s opinion on the future EU Budget and welcomed the fact that, despite Brexit, the Parliament was willing to continue funding the PEACE Programme.

“It was heartening that colleagues, despite the UK Leave vote, are prepared to continue to support a project which has done so much to improve the quality of life for the people of Northern Ireland and our people in border counties”, Independent MEP Marian Harkin concluded.
