DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCILLOR CALLS FOR ISLAND FIREFIGHTERS TO HAVE SAME STATUS AS MAINLAND FIREFIGHTERS

Independent Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig has called for all of Donegal’s Island firefighters to be given the same status as mainland firefighters.

The west Donegal councillor has revealed that some of the island’s fire fighters operating on the islands off the Donegal coast are not ‘retained firemen’, despite the fact they provide an excellent and essential service.

Mac Giolla Easbuig stated that; “I raised this issue at an island committee meeting a number of months ago and asked that a meeting be held between Representatives of the island’s firefighters and the Council. I welcome the fact that there will be a meeting now in the coming weeks to discuss the issue and I would like to see a quick resolution. It is simple, this is an equal pay issue and I call on the Council to grant the firefighters the same treatment as mainland firefighters.”
