INCREASE IN MINIMUM WAGE LOOKS LIKELY

minimum wage2There is increasing speculation that the Low Pay Commission have recommended an increase in the minimum wage, according to RTÉ.

There are currently 70,000 workers in Ireland earning minimum wage which currently stands at €9.15 an hour. It is rumoured that the Low Pay Commission is recommending a 10c increase in the rate, to €9.25 an hour.

It had been a goal of the government to increase the minimum wage to €10.50 by 2020, something which would seem to be a distant goal if just a 10c increase is implement for 2017.

The last time the minimum wage was increased, it went from €8.65 to its current level – a far greater increase of almost 6%.

A 10c increase in the minimum wage now would represent just a 1% increase.

According to RTÉ, the Cabinet is considering the latest Low Pay Commission proposals today.
