July 23, 2016

COURTS: A 19 year-old man who took his sister’s car to the cinema, has been disqualified from driving after it was discovered he was uninsured.

David Stonys, 19, with an address at 107 Lawnsdale, Navenny, Ballybofey appeared at Letterkenny District Court on Thursday morning.

The court heard how on the 4th February this year, Gardaí observed a vehicle with no lights on pulling into Century Cinemas.

They followed the driver into the car park, and discovered that the drive of the vehicle had no insurance, and the car was then seized by Gardaí.

Solicitor for the defendant Ciaran MacLochlainn said his client was extremely naïve for doing what he did, but said he had asked for insurance cover but the quote was way above his means.

MacLochlainn told the court, “My client is 19 years of age, and he took his sister’s car knowing he had no insurance, it was remarkably naïve of him and he regrets it.

“His actions didn’t cause any accident or injury and there was no badness involved – but it was naïve.

“He had asked for insurance cover, but he was quoted over €3,000 which was way above his means.

“He has recently gained employment, and he needs his car to get to work.”

Judge Paul Kelly fined the defendant €300 and gave him four months to pay, and disqualified the defendant from driving for a period of four months.
