The Garda Ombudsman has confirmed it is investigating reports that Gardai interacted with the car in which two men died in a crash outside Letterkenny this morning.

GSOC has revealed that investigators have travelled Donegal to investigate the circumstances of the crash on the dual carriageway.

Two men, one aged in his late teens and the other in his early 20s, died when their Mitsubishi Charisma car was involved in a head-on collision with a yellow Renault van at 4.45am.

The driver of the van is in a serious condition in hospital.

It is understood the Mitsubishi car being driven by the young men, both from Letterkenny, was driving form the Letterkenny direction on the WRONG side of the dual carriageway close to the Trimragh Junction.

A spokesman for the Garda Ombudsman confirmed a full investigation into Garda involvement in the case is underway.

Donegal Daily understands that Gardai did observe the car on two occasions but did NOT pursue it.

A spokesman for GSOC said “It was referred to GSOC in line with normal procedure when it appears that the conduct of a Garda member may have resulted in death or serious harm.

“It has been reported to GSOC that there had been some interaction between gardaí and the vehicle in which the two young men were travelling prior to the collision.

“GSOC will examine the circumstances to establish the facts in this regard. Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station 074-9167100 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.”
