“Government must not fail Donegal’s Mica families” – Mac Lochlainn

Donegal Sinn Féin Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn again reiterated his call for the Government to widen the terms of reference of the panel.

He made the call after a meeting with the Expert Panel tasked with investigating the Mica defective concrete blocks crisis in the county.

Senator Mac Lochlainn confirmed that the panel will submit its report to the government by the end of this year.

He said: “While I appreciate the opportunity to meet with the expert panel today and to convey my perspectives on this crisis for so many families in Donegal, I am more convinced than ever that their terms of reference need to be widened to allow them to investigate the impact of mica defective blocks on public and private buildings; to be permitted to recommend a future framework for the regulation of the industry and to be permitted to actually recommend a redress scheme.”

“Unfortunately this government have repeatedly refused to do so. When this panel reports, the government must not fail Donegal’s mica families.”

“They must put in place a redress scheme similar to that in place for the families affected by the pyrite issue in Dublin and North Leinster.”

“They must also assure the public that this disaster for the affected families in Donegal will never be allowed to happen again with strong regulation and building controls established.”
