Donegal is to get its SECOND ‘beach wheelchair’ after a big-hearted donation from a Strabane company.

Wheelchair users have been able to access the beach in Rathmullan this year thanks to the arrival of the county’s first such wheelchair.

The arrival of the wheelchair followed work by Donegal County Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh who spotted a similar project in Co Wexford.

Now Strabane company Meritcom have contacted Cllr Kavanagh to say they wish to sponsor a second such wheelchair.

Cllr Kavanagh said he is delighted by the generous offer.

“The beach wheelchair has been a great addition to Rathmullan and it’s great that it is there when people need it.

“This offer from Meritcom came completely out of the blue but I am just so delighted and humbled by it,” he said.

Director of Meritcom, Martin Donnelly, who lives in Letterkenny, told Donegal Daily his company are just delighted to be in a position to offer a second beach wheelchair.

“A lot of our staff members use beaches in Donegal and we thought it would be a nice gesture to give something back.

“Cllr Kavanagh has done great work in getting the first wheelchair installed and now hopefully we can help with a second.

“We have to sit down now and talk it through and get it sorted.

“We’re not sure where it will go but we will leave that up to Donegal County Council,” he said.
