There was no dream Olympic medal for Sinead Jennings and her partner Claire Lambe in the final of the Lightweight Women’s double sculls this afternoon in Rio.

Jennings, reached an historic Olympic final following a superb performance in their semi-final yesterday.

However, in a top-class field, the Irish duo just didn’t have enough to break into medal contention.

The classy Dutch crew won well, with Canada and China involved in an enthralling battle for 2nd place – with the Canadian’s narrowly ousting China in the end.

Ireland finished sixth overall, but what an incredible achievement by Jennings and Lambe to reach an Olympic final.

Hawthorn Heights was heaving with excitement – with family, friends and supporters all turning up at Sinead’s family home to see if she could win an Olympic medal, her fantastic career deserved.

But it wasn’t to be, despite their heroic efforts, Jennings (39) has waited a long time to reach the Olympics and she had done incredible well by reaching the final.

Donegal is immensely proud of you Sinead, well done on a great Olympic games.
