Donegal County Council is to host the first ever ‘Eddie Fullerton Memorial Lecture’ to mark the 25th anniversary of the assassination of a much loved Inishowen councillor.

Councillor Jack Murray has outlined details of the upcoming Eddie Fullerton memorial lecture which will take place on Saturday 27th August at 2pm in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel.

The lecture will be part of Donegal Heritage Week.

Cllr Murray said “On 25th May the council held a lovely wreath laying ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of Cllr Eddie Fullerton; the first civic event of its kind since his death.

“People from all over Inishowen and further afield came to pay their respects to a much loved representative and show their support to his family.

“Now I am delighted that the council will go a step further and host a memorial lecture and delve into subjects which Eddie felt passionately about – Ireland, its language and its revolutionary history.

“The Eddie Fullerton memorial lecture will hear from two highly reveered, world class Irish Historians who will each deliver intellectual and thought provoking presentations on.”

They are:

(i) ‘The fortunes of the Irish Language’ by Dr Emmet O’Connor, Senior Lecturer in History at Ulster University

(ii) ‘The Depressed Urbanised Surplus of the Countryside: Derry Volunteers who fought in Donegal, 1920-21’. By Professor Breandán Mac Suibhne, Associate Professor of History, Centenary College, New Jersey. The talk is based on the Tan War in Donegal, and centred on a Tyrone-man and a Derry-man with strong Inishowen connections who were in the IRA Flying Column in West Donegal.

Councillor Murray added that it is fantastic to have such esteemed speakers attend the event and speak about topics so close to Eddie’s heart.

“Everyone with an interest in Irish history, politics and those who simply want to pay tribute to Eddie are invited and encouraged to come along to this brilliant event. The lecture is free of charge and all are very welcome,” he said.

Eddie’s daughter Amanda also welcomed the event.

“We the Fullerton family are absolutely delighted about Donegal County Council organising this memorial lecture in tribute to Eddie Fullerton. We are deeply grateful to our two widely acclaimed presenters both of whom expressed a delight in contributing – those who knew Eddie Fullerton know that he would have been truly humbled at the accolade,” she said.
