Despite signs of economic recovery and improvement in the rate of Irish returning home over the last number of years, emigration is rising among 15-24 year olds.
This week the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published its annual Population and Migration estimates.
The figures revealed for the second year in a row an increase in the overall number of Irish nationals returning to Ireland.
Of course this is very welcome news, however on closer inspection we see that a significant proportion of young people aged between 15 – 24 years of age (31,700 in total, up from 30,400 in ) left the country in the last year.
The current programme by the Government promises to support 70,000 people to return to Ireland by 2020. If this target is to be achieved, then more needs to be done to make Ireland a more attractive place for young people to live and to work, and to support, encourage and facilitate young Irish emigrants to return home.
So, how can Government attract the young people back to Ireland in the future?
