Working parents may damage child’s health by not spending quality time with them

Excerpts from a study conducted by University College Cork have been released to The Irish Independent today. The study indicates that working parents may impact their children’s health negatively by ‘not being there’, and not having the time to get to know their children as well as they should.

The study was established to explore how to improve our children’s health, which will feed into the National Obesity Plan.

A shocking one in four children is overweight or obese in Ireland, and Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone wants to put the “voice of children” at the heart of the study.

Concerns highlighted in the study include the fact that many primary and secondary school aged children feel as though “no one is listening to children’s opinions”.

Concern was also brought up in regard to body image, funding for youth groups such as Foróige, and the amount of sleep children should be getting every night.

The full report to be released at the end of September.
