Irish Skin Foundation in association with the Eczema Council of Ireland have organised a day of expert talks during their National Eczema Awareness week.
A highly common condition, eczema affects 1 in 12 adults and 1 in 5 children.
Eczema is an autoimmune condition where the skin can become itchy, inflammed and scaly. The skin may crack and weep. It is not contagious and is usually treated with steroid creams, and in extreme cases patients are prescribed immunosuppresant drugs such as cyclosporine.
As part of Eczema Awareness Week, the Eczema Council have made a submission to the government on behalf of all who suffer from a skin condition. It highlights their advocacy agenda to improve quality of life for any affected by a skin disorder.
Eczema not only affects the skin, but it can also lead to self-esteem issues, too.
During this week people are encouraged to discuss their experience with the condition to their family and friends and explain what having eczema means to them.
The Eczema Council are also working on compiling information booklets for children and adults full of information about the condition and helpful tips for people who suffer from the condition.
‘Eczema Expert: Advice for Life’, will be held at the Red Cow Moral Hotel in Dublin on Saturday to help anyone caring for eczema to learn more about managing the condition. For more information on this free event you can log on to the Irish Skin Foundation’s website. If you cannot attend, don’t worry as we will be reporting on the event.
