PICTURE: Bren Whelan has established himself as one of the best photographers around – and he has managed to capture a whole host of visually stunning images highlighting Donegal’s beauty.

His latest offering, could be his best yet, a spectacular image which captured the ‘Autumn Equinox at the Grianan of Aileach stone fort.

The ancient fort is 4,000 years old and is perched on a hill high above Burt.

It is a major tourist attraction in the North-West, with thousands flocking to the fort every year.

Whelan managed to capture this wonderful shot, (above) which clearly shows how the aptly named ‘Stone Fort of the Sun’ was built to align with the sun’s movements.

On just two days every year, on the spring and autumn equinoxes, the rising sun aligns with the monument and rays beam through the entrance, dividing the structure in two.

What another stunning image of Donegal in all its glorious beauty, credit to Bren Whelan for the incredible image.
