Breaking news: Two men have been arrested in connection with today’s blaze which destroyed cars and damaged business premises in Letterkenny.

The men were arrested around 1pm and are being quizzed at Letterkenny Garda station.

The suspects can be detained for an initial six hours and can then have their period of detention extended.

Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan confirmed that two people are in custody in connection with the suspected arson attack.

The arrests follow an incident in the Rosemount Lane area off the town’s Main Street which saw up to nine cars destroyed by fire just before 2am.

Two business premises were also damaged following the blaze which was spotted by passing Gardai.

Dozens of people had to be evacuated from the apartment block above the underground carpark and put up in a local hotel.

One man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital but has since been released.

Both Watson’s Menswear and O’Herir’s Bakery suffered smoke damage as a result of the blaze.
