It’s the first Friday of October, which means it’s World Smile Day – a celebration of the smiley face created by artist Harvey Ball in 1963.
We’ve got the Friday feeling, and to celebrate our great county we’ve got a list of things we have in Donegal that you can’t help but feel good about.
1. The Sights
From Glenveagh National Park to Fanad Lighthouse to Slieve League, we’ve got some of the most beautiful places to visit, set in stunning locations. We have untouched beaches spanning for miles that are made for a peaceful seaside stroll. A day out in Donegal is good for the soul, and there are so many hidden gems out there to be discovered.
2. The Craic
“Well sir, what’s the craic?” Up here it’s different, and we’ve got our own quirks to make us unique. You couldn’t beat Donegal humour, which is mostly based on not taking ourselves too seriously.

Comedian Conal Gallen – always up for a laugh
3. The Chat
We’re the proud title holders of the award for the sexiest accent in Ireland. You only have to travel outside the county for a second to realise how popular the Donegal lilt can be, and how powerful it is in the dating world.
4. The Heroes
Kincasslagh crooner Daniel O’Donnell is one of our best exports, who sends hearts aflutter all over the world. We have so many sports stars and All-Ireland champions to inspire us all to go for gold. Timmy the donkey became our furry hero last month as his brave journey to walk again proved a heart-warming tale. Just this week, Fr. Pat Ward the famous Kincasslagh/Acres priest has transformed the wedding photography scene with his selfie skills.
5. The Hospitality

Nestled in between hills and trees, Harvey’s Point sits on the scenic Lough Eske
Stunning hotels set in idyllic surroundings provide for the perfect retreat. Ireland’s Hotel of the Year, Harvey’s Point, sits on the shores of Lough Eske.
The culinary delights of Donegal are second to none. Chris Molloy, Chef at the The Lemon Tree Restaurant in Letterkenny was recently crowned Donegal Chowder Champion, while the Silver Tassie Hotel is the Ulster Hotel Carvery of The Year 2016 winner.

Foodie delights at the Taste of Donegal festival
Top food and drink from artisan producers and fine dining restaurants with local dishes are tempting foodies from all over. It’s hard to beat a bit of Donegal nosh, and now we have the likes of the Taste of Donegal Food Festival to highlight all we have to offer and keep our tastebuds happy.
There’s plenty up here to put a smile on your face, from the natural gems to the homegrown celebrities. Donegal has it all, so today’s a great excuse to celebrate the best of our wee county. What is it about Donegal that makes you smile?
