Destination Donegal for Dutch TV presenting duo

The adventures of two brothers from the Netherlands were shown on Dutch TV last weekend – showcasing some of Donegal’s top tourist spots.

Some 900,000 TV viewers in the Netherlands tuned in to Frans and Dorus Bauer’s travel show Vive la Frans on Saturday last.

The Bauers visited Donegal this summer and were filmed sea stack climbing in Malin Head. They also visited the King of Tory on Tory Island.

Showcasing Donegal’s natural scenery, this programme could attract more potential holidaymakers to the county.

Vive la Frans follows the presenters as they explore Europe’s culture, music and scenery, gathering insights into local life from the people they meet along the way.

The show airs on NPO 1, the oldest TV channel in the Netherlands. Filming for three episodes of the show took place this summer in Donegal, as well as Dublin, Meath, Tipperary, Westmeath and Down.

Karen van der Horst, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for the Netherlands, said: “The Bauer brothers have a loyal following in the Netherlands and their focus on Ireland’s culture, music and landscape will appeal to our important ‘culturally curious’ audience, inspiring them to come and explore the landscapes and locations featured for themselves.”

Irish tourism from the Netherlands is on the increase, with a 27% rise in visitors from the Benelux countries so far in 2016. That’s an extra 64,400 tourists compared to last year.

It is hoped that such media exposure featuring Donegal will attract more visitors to county in the near future.
