A local councillor has claimed that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt or killed because of wild deer crossing roads near one of Donegal’s most popular tourist spots.
Councillor Michael Mac Giolla Easbuig says he has been contacted by a number of motorists who have been struck by crossing deer close to Glenveagh National Park.
Donegal County Council did recently issue a warning over rutting deer in several parts of the county.
Councillor Mac Giolla Easbuig says he has contacted staff at Glenveagh to see what can been done about the issue.
“Several people have come to me say g their cars have been struck by deer and have been damaged.
“I am awaiting a reply from Glenveagh staff but this is a serious issue. A car striking a deer at speed has the potential to cause serious injury or even worse to motorists and their passengers.
“I am urging staff to come back to me and to let me know what measures are being taken to ensure that we take these deer off our roads,” he said.
Glenveagh is home to the largest herd of red deer in Ireland.
