A woman who came to the aid of a young man who was viciously attacked in Letterkenny yesterday morning has appealed to people to get first aid training.

Treasa McKeown luckily came across the man who had been assaulted at the Port Roundabout.

The man is in serious condition at Letterkenny University Hospital, but fortunately his injuries are not life-threatening.

The vicious attack occurred at approximately 3am close to the Port Roundabout.

Treasa revealed how she was on her way home and was seeking a taxi when she came across the incident.

She said; “I was walking down to get a cab and it happened just before I reached there. I don’t know if it was fortunately or unfortunately that I was the first person to reach him that had some kind of first aid training, but I know, for my place I shouted (the amount of onlookers were massive) but nobody actually doing anything!”

“That 2% always do. Well, I knew I belonged to that group anyway! I had to shout them all away, and do the recovery position with the man, that’s all I knew what to do from my training in 2006. ”

“Thank God two nurses came on the scene after. This boy was losing a lot of blood from his head.”

Treasa added that she hoped others could avail of first aid training and put it to good use during future emergency situations.

“Moral of the story is, everyone should get some kind of first aid training because you never know when you will need to put it to use. Ten years later for me, but I still remembered.”

Meanwhile Gardai are still carrying out their investigations into the assault and are appealing to anybody who witnessed the attack to contact Letterkenny Garda station.
