Donegal plumber needs your vote to take part in Polar arctic dog sled race!

A well-known plumber from Lifford wants to try something ridiculously new to him – and he needs your vote to make his dream come through.

For 20 years Barry Hannigan, 37, has had his head under sinks and fixing leaky taps.

Now the father of three wants to take part in a polar expedition but not just any old polar expedition.

The Fjällräven Polar is an artic dog sled competition which starts in Norway and crosses the border to finish in Sweden lasting 5 days through 300km of undisturbed frozen artic wilderness.

The brainchild of Fjällräven founder Åke Nordin, the event is based on the world famous Alaskan dog sled competition ‘The Iditarod’ with one key difference, the competitors are not professionals!

In fact anyone can enter with little to no experience. All you need is a reasonable level of fitness and the will to push through the frozen artic conditions.

To win a place in this event of a life time you must either place first in the voting for your county/region or be selected by Fjällräven as the second and final competitor from each group.

Voting is taken place worldwide as you read this and now Barry wants your vote!

Barry explained that due to downturn in work and being totally fed up, he decided to pursue a life long love of adventure, the mountains and outdoors and began training as a Mountain Leader (mountain guide) with the intention of making this my primary job.

2016 has seen Barry lead his first groups through the hills of Ireland which has solidified his decision to become a leader.

Barry told Donegal Daily “For me to win a place on the Polar would not only releasing a boyhood dream of working with a dog team in artic conditions and the opportunity to be in the artic would increase my level of understanding and ability in these conditions as well as testing my absolute limits of cold weather endurance.

“It would also give me many stories to bring back to the kids and groups I lead through out Irish hills. I would also be the first Irish person ever to win a spot, and carrying a Donegal flag all the way.”
