Campaigner’s anger over lack of drugs warning in Garda Christmas campaign

Well-known anti-drugs campaigner PJ Blake has slammed the Gardai for making no mention of drug-driving in their Christmas campaign.

Both the Gardai and PSNI recently launched their cross-border drink-driving campaign.

But former town councillor Blake has said the issue of drug-driving is simply not on the radar of Gardai.

He said that despite an increasing drugs problem in the county, drug-driving is not being highlighted.

He told Donegal Daily “This was the perfect opportunity for both the Gardai and the PSNI to highlight the increasing issue of drug-driving during the their joint Christmas campaign.

“However there was not one mention of drug-driving as far as I can see and that is simply nota acceptable.

“Everyone accepts that it is a very real issue and here it is either being forgotten about or completely ignored.”

The former councillor said he would like the Gardai in Donegal to come out and to warn people that if caught under the influence of drugs behind the wheel that they will be dealt with severely.

“I appreciate that the resources of the Gardai are stretched. But that is not good enough excuse for them not top mention drug-driving and to warn people of the consequences if they are caught,” he said.
