Right2Water Donegal caution people on Expert Commission findings

Right2Water Donegal has cautioned people to remain focused to some of the findings of the Expert Commission on Water Charges.

The group says it remains steadfast in their call for the complete abolition of water charges.

It added that it is their opinion that this commission has been a waste of €280,000 to come up with this ‘Expert Report.’

The findings will now be considered by a special Oireachtas Committee made up of 16 TDs and four Senators.

However, the future of water charges will not be decided by a Dail vote until next March.

Owen Curran ,of Right2Water, Donegal said “It has to be pointed out that it is up to the Dail to make the final decision on water charges, so we will be keeping a keen eye on politicians who have promised to abolish water charge in their election manifestos.”

Charlie Mc Dyer, Chairperson of Right2Water, Donegal added “We will be watching Fianna Fail closely in how they vote when the time comes , remembering that they have already stated in their submission to the expert commission that they want the charges abolished.Tonight they seem to be keeping their powder dry and have made no comment on tonight’s report.”

“The government and Fianna Fail should bear in mind – That those who have campaigned, marched, and refused to pay did so with the aim of having the water charges abolished. According to Fine Gael water charges of some description will remain. Once we accept the principle of a charge it will only go in one direction. The so called free allowance will be reduced and the amount of the charges will go up. Nothing short of the outright abolition of domestic charges will suffice.

“If the government or their Fianna Fail allies attempt to re-introduce water charges they will be met with a renewed campaign of resistance by ‘ordinary people’ which will result in those parties paying a huge political price,” added Philip McFadden, of Right2Water, Donegal.
