National Geographic names Donegal as the coolest place of all for 2017!

Donegal has topped the list of the coolest place in the world to visit in 2017.

National Geographic Traveller today announced The Cool List: 17 for 2017, and placed the county above many cities and entire countries around the world.

Donegal is set to have a hugely successful year for tourism in 2017, and this latest announcement describes the county as a place that is “generally keeping it cool”.

From Dusseldorf to Seoul, and New Zealand to the whole of the USA – Donegal’s image of an undiscovered land has made it so attractive.

The filming of scenes from the latest Star Wars movie, the natural scenery and possible adventures to be had here all combined to make Donegal so ‘cool’ in the eyes of the influential travel magazine from National Geographic.

The publication describes Donegal’s “dreamlike landscape” and roads that “wind like ribbons” to locations such as Silver Strand.

Top properties like Solis Lough Eske, Harvey’s Point and Rathmullen House are recommended.

The food scene gets a mention too, with Kinnegar beers and Harry’s restaurant in Bridgend listed as must-dos.

Describing the county, the online edition of the article says: “With a weather-nibbled coast spotted with sea stacks, Blue Flag beaches and offshore islands, Donegal is a land that feels undiscovered. Last summer, scenes for Star Wars: Episode VIII were filmed on the Inishowen Peninsula. But this area of Ireland is also expecting 2017 to be a big year; there’s an array of reasons to visit, from surfing beaches in Magheroarty and Ballyhiernan Bay to Horn Head — a driving, walking or cycling loop that squeezes the 1,600-mile Wild Atlantic Way into a 4.5-mile nutshell.”

Thanks to this top placement on the list and the huge tourism drive attracting visitors to the county, Donegal will be ‘forgotten no more’.
