This is the charred remains of a house in which a family of eight were lucky to escape from overnight.

The parents and six children fled the house dormer home in Fintown after one of the children alerted the others to the blaze around 2am.

Two units of the fire service from Glenties and Dungloe were on the
scene quickly but the house was badly damaged.

More than three quarters of the building’s roof collapsed as the blaze
caught hold.

Thankfully none of the occupants suffered any injury.

A full investigation into the cause of the blaze has been launched.

Assistant Chief Officer Glen Hamilton said the child almost certainly
saved the rest of the family from what could have been tragic
circumstances.

He advised people to ensure to follow all safety guidelines at this
time of the year as Christmas draws near.
