A land and sea search has been launched after a bicycle of a man was found abandoned close to Rathmullan.

The bicycle, which was found at the townland of Oughterlin, is understood to have been there for a number of days.

A subsequent search for the man at his home nearby found no trace of his whereabouts.

A large land and sea search has been taking place all day for the man, who is believed to be in his early 70s.

It is understood the man, who is not married and lives alone close to St Catherine’s Church near Aughterlin, has not been seen for a number of days.

The Rescue 118 helicopter based at Sligo has been taking part in the search which included a specific search of bogland north-west of Rathmullan.

The Mulroy Coastguard are also taking part in the search.

A large search of land and fields is also taking place for the missing man in and around Rathmullan.

His name has not yet been released.

The search has been stood down for the night but is expected to resume again in the morning.
