Wintry weather is no deterrent to golfers at Ballyliffin

written by Chris McNulty December 5, 2016
Facebook0Tweet0LinkedIn0Print0

The weather had a wintry feel to it about Ballyliffin this weekend but it didn’t deter the hardy souls from their game of golf.

The Friday Open was won by 8 handicapper Iain Mc Cafferty with 37pts. In 2nd place was John Gibbons [10] with 34pts. Gary Stewart [7] took 3rd also with 34pts on the break of a tie.

The Saturday Open was won by visitor Peter R McNeice [12] with a fantastic score of 43pts.

In second spot was 7 handicapper Liam Tourish with a 1 over round giving him 42pts.

Liam and his playing partner Des Kemmy had no bother taking the money off the other hackers Cecil Doherty and Damian Mooney.

In third place was Colm McLaughlin [18] with 41pts. Fourth spot went to Paul Grant [6] with 40pts.

Keith Lapsley [5] made a welcome return to the prizes by taking the Gross with 35 gross pts.

Sunday was Hamper day on both courses. There wasn’t a turkey safe in the parish all week with Wee Johnny running around with an axe with him.

On Glashedy taking 1st place was 1 handicapper Brendan Devlin with 36pts. After dropping a shot at the first hole. I’m sure Brendan had little thought of winning the hamper but he  included fifteen 4’s on his card after that which was enough to beat Jimmy Clancy [11] who took 2nd also on 36pts.

On the Old, the plumber from Glengad took the honours Eddie McGonagle [17] with 39pts took first place. In second place was Diamuird Walsh [20] also with 39pts on the break of a tie. Early Sunday seems to be the time to go out looking at all those prizewinners. I’m gonna apply for my Pioneer pin tomorrow.

The Wednesday Society will wind up for the year next Wed when the Christmas party will take place. Last Wednesday, the Buncrana jeweller Brendan Callaghan took the honours with 39pts beating our President Frank Harkin  in his last week in office on the break of a tie.

In 3rd place was Peter Pan himself Patsy Toland with 34pts.

In the Golfer Of The Year Don “Klopp” M Gonagle defended his lead better than his beloved Liverpool and took the title. Well done Don. Happy Golfing.
