Rain and frost set to dampen New Year’s Eve celebrations

The weather this weekend is not looking good for anyone going out or travelling on New Year’s Eve, as rain and frost are forecast for Donegal.

The unseasonably mild weather we had over Christmas is set to change by the weekend, and Saturday night will see frost setting in over the north west.

Met Eireann are forecasting strong winds for Saturday evening and rain coming in from the coast. The rain will turn persistent and push southeastwards over the country on Saturday night introducing a much colder northerly wind. A frost will develop in the northwest later on Saturday night as the rain clears there and breaks in cloud develop.

Met Eireann predict that the rain will push southwards during the early hours of Sunday morning. It will be a cold day with temperatures only about 5 degrees in the afternoon with a moderate northerly wind.
