HSE approval has now been granted for a new X-Ray imaging machine for Dungloe Community Hospital, with installation of the new device expected in March 2017.
The announcement comes just weeks after the problems with the hospital’s existing imaging equipment were first raised by Deputy Pearse Doherty in the Dáil before the Christmas recess.
Welcoming the news, Deputy Doherty said “In December, I received correspondence from the HSE in which management confirmed that the radiology department at Dungloe hospital had ceased taking patient referrals due to equipment failure at the unit.
“At the time, the HSE stated that the facility was awaiting components to repair the onsite x-ray machine which was subsequently operational again once repairs were carried out.
“Since then patients have, and still continue to have, x-rays performed at the hospital using the facility’s existing equipment. While I welcomed this action at the time, I made it clear that a more long term solution for the unit was needed.
“Following this, I immediately raised the issue of the out-dated equipment at the hospital’s radiology department with the Minister for Health in the Dáil and urged him to approve the hospital’s application for a brand new X ray machine which was badly needed to ensure that patients had access to a safe and reliable service locally.
“Today, I am absolutely delighted to have now received a response from the HSE following my representations to the Minister in which it has been confirmed that approval has now been granted for a new xray imaging machine, and that installation of this new equipment is expected to be carried out before the end of March 2017.”
The Sinn Fein Deputy said this is a fantastic result for the patients, hospital staff and all the communities throughout West Donegal who will now have access to imaging services which are reliable and fit for purpose.
“I want to also thank the patients and staff at Dungloe hospital for their patience and understanding over recent months while radiography services were suspended and during which time repairs to the suite were being carried out – today’s news will come as a huge relief for them and everyone who depends on this service.”
