Donegal Senator Padraig MacLochlainn has paid a fitting tribute to retiring Sinn Fein politician Martin McGuinness.

Mr McGuinness last night announced he will be retiring from politics due to ill health.

Senator MacLochlainn, a close friend of Mr McGuinness, said the Derry man was a giant of Irish politics.

“Martin McGuinness is a giant of Irish politics.

“Thank you my good friend for your vision and your leadership over these decades.

“Like all your friends and comrades across Ireland, I wish you a full recovery and look forward to your guidance and wisdom over the many challenges ahead,” he said.

Other Sinn Fein politicians including Deputy Pearse Doherty and councillors Gerry McMonigle and Jack Murray have also wished Mr McGuinness well.
