Cockhill get boardroom boost in USL title race after Derry field ‘ineligible’ team

COCKHILL CELTIC now have a nine-point lead at the top of the 4 Lanterns Ulster Senior League after the Inishowen side were awarded a win from a game they lost on Sunday.

Cockhill hadn’t lost in 72 games until a fortnight ago and on Sunday they lost for the second time in three games when they went down 3-1 to a strong Derry City Reserves.

However, the Ulster Senior League confirmed tonight that the Candystripes had breached the League’s rules on the number of ‘senior’ players who can participate at any one time.

Derry City and Finn Harps both field reserve teams in the USL and can play a maximum of three ‘senior’ players per match. The clubs are required to submit a ‘senior list’ to the League while other players are classified as ‘senior’ once they play in excess of four League of Ireland games.

Ulster Senior League Media Statement

The Ulster Senior League confirm that Derry City Reserves have been found, under rules 48-51 of the Ulster Senior League Rulebook, to have fielded an ineligble team in Sunday’s game against Cockhill Celtic.

The match has been declared as a forefit, meaning the game has been awarded to Cockhill Celtic on a 3-0 scoreline.

An updated League table, reflecting this decision, is available here: http://www.uslfootball.com/league/110470/l_e_a_g_u_e_t_a_b_l_e
