The title of Donegal Secondary School Sportshall Champions has been won by the Loreto Letterkenny 1st year girls.

After progressing in the regional competition on Thursday 19th January, the team of 15 girls showed great athleticism and determination to take the county title in Deele college last Friday. Their great performances resulted in the team earning 74 points beating second place Pobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair.

The 1st year girls will travel to Athlone this Thursday 2nd February to represent the county at the Sportshall Athletics National Inter County Event.

Many lunchtimes spent practicing baton passovers payed off when both Loreto relay teams won gold in the 4 x 2 Lap relay. The Loreto A team consisted of Precious Aduaka, Lugin Elnaim, Sophie O’Hara and Alanna Lunney showed great talent in taking gold.

The Loreto B team consisting of Zoe McFadden, Ola Rzymska, Jasmine Gallagher and Sinead Hosain impressed us all with their sheer determination and talent in also taking gold.

The Loreto girls dominated the 2 Lap with Precious Aduaka and Michaela Galvin taking 1st and 2nd with less than a 100th of a second between them. Precious also took home an impressive gold in the Shot Putt. Sophie, Alanna, Jasmin and Tiegan Smith put up strong performances in both the 4 Lap and 6 Lap, with Tiegan taking 3rd place in her event.

Other strong performances in the field events included Sinead and Michaela both taking 2nd place in vertical and standing long jump, with Zoe and Lugin in the triple jump and Nuala Bose and Clodagh Friel in the speed bounce all performing well.

The team would not be complete without Megan McDaid, Aine McLaughlin and Kamara Ezenwe who also trained hard and supported their team mates on the day.

The team would like to thank their coach Ms Michelle Ferguson and the TY students for all their support and hard work in helping them to achieve this county title.
