A chef from Donegal is to compete for the honour of being crowned Aramark’s Chef of the Year in Ireland.

Paul Doherty has been shortlisted to compete at the National Chef’s Cup on the 22nd February in the RDS.

Paul started his career at the young age of 14 in a family run restaurant “Harrys”. This is where his passion for food and cooking was realised.

He trained at North West Regional College and worked in various establishments in Derry before being appointed Head Chef at the Ture Inn.

Paul holds the position of Executive Head Chef at Seagate in Derry, where the contract has been held for 19 years.

Paul is originally from Inch Island, Donegal but has lived in Derry for 19 years.

Eight of Aramark Ireland’s finest chefs will compete at the National Chef’s Cup aiming to win their chance to represent Ireland at the European Chef’s Cup which will also be held in Ireland in March. Chefs from across Europe will compete for Top Honours in Croke Park on the 2nd March.

The National Chef’s Cup is a challenging and tough competition.  Using only Irish ingredients, Paul will be required to prepare, cook and present a main course within 60 minutes.

The judging panel will include award-winning chef and Aramark culinary director Derek Reilly and Michelin star chef Ross Lewis from Dublin’s Chapter One Restaurant.

Aramark, the food giant that is organising the event, will also unveil ‘A History of Irish Food’ – a three minute film exploring traditional Irish dishes, foods, their origins and popular trends incorporating Irish ingredients, at Croke Park.

Speaking ahead of the final Frank Gleeson, Aramark’s MD & COO for Northern Europe, said that months of preparation and hundreds of hours of work have gone into both the Chef’s Cup and the European Cup.

He said: “The Chef’s Cup and European Cup are one of the most exciting food events of the year. The Chef’s Cup is a fast-paced, live competition where the best of the best go head-to-head to represent Ireland at the European Cup in Croke Park.”
