Late McLaughlin point seals another win for Donegal ladies

Geraldine McLaughlin scored a point in injury time to secure the Donegal ladies a second win in two games yesterday.

Galway 1-12 Donegal 2-10

The Micheál Naughton-managed team are in their first year back in Division 1, but after defeating Armagh last Sunday, they dug deep for another precious two points in Tuam yesterday.

Termon sharp-shooter McLaughlin top-scored for Donegal with a goal and five points.

Donegal burst from the blocks and McLaughlin netted before Niamh Hegarty bagged another goal for the Tir Chonaill women.

Galway came out stronger in the second half and were given a boost when Ailbhe Davoren fired past Laura Gallagher, the Donegal goalkeeper.

However, Donegal have a real never-say-die approach.

Last year in a qualifier, Yvonne McMonagle hit a last-gasp point when Donegal sneaked through against Galway. Here, it was McLaughlin who repeated the trick for Donegal.

Donegal: Laura Gallagher; Treasa Doherty, Emer Gallagher, Kelly Wilson; Therese McCafferty, Nicole McMcLaughlin, Kaneshia McKinney; Katy Herron, Karen Guthrie (0-2); Grainne Houston, Niamh Hegarty (1-1), Eilish Ward; Roisin Friel (0-1), Geraldine McLaughlin (1-5), Paula McCrory (0-1). Donegal subs used: Ciara Hegarty, Shannon McGroddy, Kate Keaney, Caroline Gallagher, Lucy O’Flynn.
