RAPHOE badminton player Chloe Magee created history at the weekend as she won the mixed doubles and women’s doubles titles at the Irish Senior Nationals in Lisburn.

Magee, a three-time Olympian, won the 22nd and 23rd National titles.

Magee has now overhauled Bruce Topping’s haul of 22 titles after another stunning weekend.

Magee has competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing (2008), London (2012) and Rio (2016) in the women’s singles, but is now putting most of her focus into the mixed doubles, where she aims to make the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 alongside her brother, Sam.

Magee’s mantle in the women’s singles was taken by her niece, Rachael Darragh, a real rising star in the sport, as she defeated Sara Boyle.

In the women’s doubles, Magee and Darragh partnered off to claim glory,.

After defeating Kate Frost and Moya Ryan 21-11, 21-18, they overcame Clodagh Dunne and Beth Stephenson 21-8, 21-16.

In the final, they had to come from behind after losing 19-21 in the first game, but 21-7, 21-11 wins saw them take the title.

In the mixed doubles, Chloe and Sam

They defeated Owen Marron and Kate Frost 21-9, 21-9 before recording a 21-7, 21-10 triumph against Crona Rooney and they were top of the pile after a superb 21-14, 21-7 win over Ciaran Chambers and Sinead Chambers in the final.

It was a memorable weekend for the Magee family and the Raphoe Badminton Club as they claimed four of the five titles on offer.

Darragh defeated Sara Boyle 22-20, 21-15 in the women’s singles final after earlier wins over Rebecca Woods (21-13, 21-7) and Vicki Pesti (21-5, 21-7).

Sam and Joshua Magee were victorious in the men’s doubles.

They saw off Ciaran Chambers and Stuart Lightbody (21-10, 21-5) and the Tony Murphy-Tony Stephenson combination (21-11, 21-9) before a tough final win over Nhat Nguyen and Paul Reynolds (21-16, 21-13).

In the men’s singles, Joshua Magee reached the final after defeating Adam McAllister (21-12, 21-13) and Owen Marron (21-12, 19-21, 21-11), but he was edged out by Nguyen in the decider (13-21, 14-21).
