‘Mental stuff’: Donegal pupil tells of canteen chaos as one arrested in lunchtime brawl

A schoolboy from Donegal says the lunchtime fight in the canteen of a Strabane school yesterday was ‘mental stuff’.

PSNI and ambulance services attended the scene after a brawl broke out in the canteen at Holy Cross College in Strabane.

One male pupil was arrested before later being released into the custody of his parents, while some students and teachers were believed to have sustained minor injuries in the canteen chaos.

Several teachers in the school are from Donegal while the school also has a big number of students from the border area in Donegal.

“I was in the canteen having soup and a roll, when two boys started fighting down the back,” one pupil said.

“The teachers came in to try to break it all up and put everyone out of the canteen.

“It was broken up for a wee minute and then it just kicked off again with another fight. It was a massive fight. I never saw anything like it.

“There was so much going on and it was just moving on up the canteen.

“Tables were being flipped, chairs were flying everywhere.

“They just wouldn’t stop and a couple of girls even got hit in the middle of it all. It was just mental stuff.”

The school went into lockdown with students kept in classrooms as teaching staff patrolled the corridors.

The scrap broke out as the students were sitting down to lunch.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “All parents of the pupils involved have been contacted. No serious injuries have been reported at this stage.”

The NI Ambulance Service said: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service was called at 12:52 to attend an incident at Holy Cross College, Strabane.

“One A&E crew attended but no one was transported to hospital.”

One Donegal mother, whose children attend Holy Cross College, added: “I have to say it’s a great school and I’ve never had any issues or complaints. This is just a crazy, one-off incident and it shouldn’t tarnish the school’s reputation.”
