Finn Valley’s John Kelly claimed his first senior title today, scooping gold in the men’s shot put at the National Senior Indoor Championships.

The St Johnston man and Letterkenny Institute of Technology student Kelly claimed gold as he reached the shot out to 17.02 metres.

Kelly mightn’t have managed to break his p.b, but today’s gold completes the set.

“I’m happy with the day’s work,” he declared.

“It’s back now for a few months of hard work.”

Kelly will now get to work and prepare for the European Under-23 Championships and his success came a day after Finn Valley colleague Sommer Lecky won gold in the women’s high jump.

David Tierney from Leevale in Cork was second, with a best attempt of 14.85m while Gavin McLaughlin from Finn Valley was third, managing 14.78m.

Danny Mooney of Letterkenny AC was fifth in the men’s 3k, while Tir Chonaill AC’s Caolan O’Callaghan came fifth in the men’s high jump.
