Run Donegal Women’s 5K will be out in force on Sunday the 2nd of April at 11am at the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar to raise funds for the Brid Carr Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
The event will be officially launched tomorrow evening at the Finn Valley Centre at 7:30pm.
The Brid Carr Ovarian Cancer Research Fund was established in honour of Glencolmcille woman Brid Carr, who sadly passed away aged just 54 after a battle with ovarian cancer. She had been living in London with her husband Seamus and her three children.
A nurse, Brid had worked at the Mater Hospital in Dublin, before taking up a position as a Urology Nurse Specialist at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
During her chemotherapy treatment, Brid actively campaigned with the charity Ovacome to raise awareness for the disease.
Brid’s wish was that her family continue to raise awareness for the condition and support Ovarian Cancer Research.
In honour of Brid, Run Donegal have selected the Brid Carr Ovarian Cancer Research Fund to be the beneficiary of their run this year, having raised a staggering €50,000 for the cause in 2015.
Speaking to DonegalWoman.ie, Brid’s sister Rosemary, says “We have the 5K event, then Brid’s husband plans to do a charity cycle in May. We’ll be setting up a Facebook group and JustGiving account for that again. The fundraising in 2015 went way beyond our expectations. It would be amazing if we could do it again.”
“Ovarian Cancer is often called the silent killer. It’s unfortunate that it is usually so late that it’s diagnosed. The symptoms are very vague and it is often misdiagnosed. The worst thing about it is the ovarian cancer survival rate is about 20% and it hasn’t changed in the last 20 years. We think research is the only way to fighting it”
