A case of serious assault on the son of Donegal publican Frank Shortt has collapsed at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

The case, which has been ongoing for the past two days, dramatically came to an abrupt halt this afternoon following a legal issue.

The case involves Dublin businessman Kenneth Broe, aged 44, who is charged with assaulting Kristian Shortt, now aged 36, at a flat on Letterkenny’s Main Street.

Mr Broe, of Tallaght in Dublin, denies two charges of assault and assault causing serious harm.

During his evidence on the first day of the the trial, Mr Shortt alleged that he was stabbed 17 times by Mr Broe after they had been socialising together.

Judge Brian O’Callaghan dismissed the jury and ordered a retrial.

The trial has been adjourned until the December sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.
