The community of Kilmacrennan has come together following the tragic death of one of its young residents.

Joseph McGettigan, who was aged 21, was killed after his van crashed on the outskirts of his hometown at Cottian in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The single vehicle accident happened around 1.20am on the main road between Kilmacrennan and Churchill.

Weather conditions were poor on the night and there is understood to have been a lot of surface rainwater on the roads at the time.

The late Mr McGettigan, was one of a family of eight children, and his father Lawrence is a well-known and highly-respected developer in the area.

A well thought-of young man, Joseph had his own business fitting insulation.

Garda forensic officers spent yesterday at the scene of the crash in a bid to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Yesterday’s tragedy is the second on Donegal roads in less than a week.

Last Monday evening, a young man in his 30s, also died after another horrific accident on the Inishowen Peninsula.

Married father-of-two John McLaughlin was killed outside Malin Town following a two car collision.

He was on his way to coach the Malin GAA club Under 16 team.
