John Kelly has been selected on the Ireland team for next week’s European Throws Cup at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

The Finn Valley AC man, a student at Letterkenny Institute of Technology, has been in excellent form of late with a superb start to the new season in the shot put.

In February, Kelly won his first National Senior Indoor Championships, when he threw 17.02 metres.

Kelly also won gold at the Irish Universities Athletics Championships at the Athlone IT – and shattered a 24-year-old record in the process as his 16.97m broke the distance set by Victor Costello in 1993.

St Johnston native Kelly – who will compete at the European Under-23 Championships this year – also broke the Donegal shot put record as he reached 17.49 at Santry.
