Details have been unveiled for the 21st staging of the North-West 10k.

At the launch of the event this evening, it was announced that the benefitting charities this year will be the the Donegal Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre and The Parents and Friends of Abbey Village.

From 1997 to last year, the North-West 10k has raised €744,474 for 31 charities and the 2017 version takes place on Sunday 30 April at 2pm.

This year’s benefiitting charities are the Donegal Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre and The Parents and Friends of Abbey Village.

Committee member Nancy McNamee, speaking on behalf of North-West 10k committee Chairperson Neil Martin, who was unable to attend, paid tribute to some long-standing members who have stepped down.

James Boyle, Grace Boyle, Patsy Doherty, Bridgeen Doherty and Declan Kerr vacated their positions on the committee following the 20th running of the event last year.

She said: “I’d like to thank the ex members who left the committee since last year. They did trojan work over 20 years.

“Hopefully it will be successful. It will be a lot of hard work, but it’s worthwhile.

“We’d encourage from the youngest to the oldest people you know to come out and take part. Even if you can’t take part, there might be a little job you can do on the day!

“We’d like to thank the participants from not just Donegal, but groups from Liverpool and Dublin who come here all the time. We need all the participants. It’s all about getting people out there for the event.”

Ms McNamee paid tribute to Seargant Eunan Walsh from An Garda Siochana for his assistance and to Gortlee Tool Hire for the provision of safety barriers on the day of the race.

The main sponsors of the North West 10k are Donegal Daily and Brian McCormick Sports and Leisure.

Last year’s North West 10k raised €34,500.

Councillor James Pat McDaid, the Mayor of the Letterkenny Municipal District said: “This is a fantastic event for Donegal and for Letterkenny.

“Huge numbers come in to Letterkenny for this every year. It’s vital to the area and has become a great success. It’s a credit to the committee that they keep doing this – and the figures that have been raised for charities show just how valuable it is.”

Councillor Ciaran Brogan said: “The North-West 10k has become a very successful event and also a great family day. Many charities get an opportunity to get a great platform thanks to this event. It’s a fantastic event for Donegal and the numbers speak for themselves.”

Registration is now being taken at www.northwest10k.com.

Entries will also be taken on Saturday 29th April from 3 to 6pm.

Entry closes at 1pm on day of race.
