Sinn Féin Councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh has welcomed confirmation from Donegal County Council that approval has now been received from the National Parks and Wildlife Service to carry out urgent safety works at Maghergallon Beach in Gaoth Dobhair aimed at preventing falling rock posing a rick to the public.
The announcement comes following representations made by Sinn Féin to the local authority requesting that the safety measures at the site be carried out following increasing reports of fallen rock from the cliff face onto the main access route leading to the beach.
Welcoming the news Cllr Ó Fearraigh said: “Following representations made to Donegal County Council in relation to the issue of fallen rock at Magheragallon Strand, I am thrilled to now have received this confirmation from the council that approval has been received from the relevant authorities to carry out this stabilisation work.
“The Council informs me that it is now awaiting the necessary consent and approvals from local land owners which are required before it can begin this work however, I’ve been told that this consent is currently in the process of being obtained.
“Stabilisation work is due to begin shortly thereafter, and I must thank the local authority for its tremendous efforts to work to have this issue resolved.
“The safety of beach goers had been put at risk as a result of increasing reports of fallen rock at the location, and this was understandably a major concern for beach goers and all those accessing the strand here at Magheragallon.
“I am delighted for the local community to have received this news as they have been very patient and have exercised caution while entering and leaving the beach while this problem has persisted.
“I am now very much looking forward to seeing these minor stabilisation works being completed, and to seeing local people and visitors alike returning to the beach and enjoying this very pristine site here in Gaoth Dobhair.”
