Gardai have confirmed they were called to an incident of assault in Downings early on Sunday morning.

The assault is believed to have taken place around 1am on Sunday morning.

Superintendent David Kelly at Milford Garda District Headquarters confirmed that a man in his sixties was assaulted.

He said that investigations are ongoing but declined to confirm if any arrests are imminent.

However, he indicated that a certain line of inquiry is underway and Garda are satisfied with their progress in the case.

A local community spokesman who witnessed the incident said that Downings is a very popular weekend location given the number of holiday homes in the area and he said it was to be regretted that such an incident should happen in the village.

He said he understood that ‘no locals’ were involved.
