Donegal GAA players accused of ‘wrecking’ soccer pitch in Dublin

GAA players from Donegal were allegedly involved in an ‘unapproved training session’ that has damaged a soccer pitch in Dublin.

Home Farm FC Vice Chairman Pat Clifford has hit out at the incident on Wednesday night that saw a training session involving 20 players held at the VEC Grounds in Whitehall.

Damage was allegedly done to small-sided and 11-a-side pitches at the venue. It is claimed that the players involved were from clubs in Donegal and Cavan.

“The usage of the grounds was without permission but more sinister is that these were adults and it would have been obvious to them that they were wrecking the pitches – especially as you can see the markings from shuttles,” Clifford said.

“These pitches have had an awful lot of damage done to them.

“We don’t use them to train on and the pitch markings were very clearly there to see, so it was a really unthoughtful action on their part as the pitches were in an unplayable state.

“It was obvious to these people that they were doing damage, but carried on and that’s a poor reflection on them as so-called sports people.”

Home Farm FC and Whitehall Celtic have agreements in place with the VEC which enable them to use the facility.

Mr Clifford added: “This was an unthoughtful action that has wrecked these pitches until work can be carried out to repair the damage.”
