This is the Indian man, Vikat Bhagat, who has been arrested and charged with the murder of Buncrana woman Danielle McLaughlin.

The body of 28-year-old Danielle was found on Tuesday near Palolem Beach in Canacona near Goa.

Police Superintendent Sammy Tavares, who is leading the investigation, says that Bhagat has been arrested and that the 22-year-old, a known criminal, has confessed to her murder.

CCTV footage has emerged showing Danielle walking with a man in grainy footage.

Indian police identified Bhagat from blood found on his clothes and scooter, according to their report.

Danielle’s body was found by a local farmer on Tuesday.

A postmortem will be conducted by a panel of doctors at the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.

A fund set up to help in the repatriation and funeral costs for Danielle has raised almost €30,000.

In a written statement last night, Danielle’s mother, Andrea Brannigan, said: “The family would like to express our thanks to all who have got in touch since receiving this awful news.

“As you can expect we are finding it very difficult at this trying time.

“We want to thank the Irish and British consulates, along with Colin from the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, and many friends who have assisted at this time. Danielle will be sadly missed by us all.”
