A major investment of €970,000 in a water mains project to ensure a clean and secure water supply for the 940 people served by the Portnoo Water Supply has ben announced.
This supply is on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL) for high levels of THMs and these works are being undertaken to remove any risk posed by THMs and ultimately remove the supply from the EPA’s list.
The works which are currently being carried out include the installation and commissioning of over 4km of water main in the Naran and Portnoo, Dungloe and Lettermacaward areas of Donegal. The water mains replacement is broken down into 3km in Naran and Portnoo, 350m in Quay Road, Dungloe and 1km in Lettermacaward.
Irish Water is working towards an Autumn completion date for this project.
The announcement has been welcomed by Minister Joe McHugh.
“Once again Irish Water is progressing another important scheme for people in Donegal,” said Minister McHugh.
“This is an important scheme for Portnoo, Dungloe, Lettermacaward and Naran and is part of a huge investment across Co Donegal. I want to thank Irish Water and their key partners Donegal County Council in progressing the Portnoo Water Supply with a completion in around six or seven months’ time.”
This project forms part of Irish Water’s investment plan where works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s business plan. Around €140M is being invested in water supply and treatment in Donegal.
Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5bn investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.
